Generate – Support for Individuals

Facilitated peer support groups

Generate provides in-person and online peer support groups for transgender, non-binary, and gender questioning adults. Our members range from 18 to 75+ years old, with diverse backgrounds and experiences.

In line with our mission and values, the aim of these sessions is to create a safe and welcoming space for everyone, no matter their age, background, or gender identity.

Face-to-face

Face-to-face groups are held on the first Monday of the month in York, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and the first Sunday of the month in Doncaster from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.

Our groups are a non-judgemental space to share worries, fears, problems, and good news with others with similar experiences. Our facilitators are trained professionals with lived experience of the community.

Our groups are a place where members can relax and be themselves, in a safe and supportive, friendly atmosphere. The venue is only made known to members to ensure privacy.

Online

Generate also provides weekly on-line peer support groups. Attendees must be 18 or over but there is no upper age limit, and attendees are from a range of backgrounds and experiences. Like our in person sessions they are a safe and welcoming space for everyone either questioning their gender identity or who identifies as transgender or non-binary.

These are held on Tuesday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. The benefits are that these are easy to access for those living on the outer reaches of North Yorkshire. Run by trained facilitators with lived experiences, they are a place to share worries, fears, problems, and good news with others with similar experiences.

Many members report that our groups, both face-to-face and online can feel like a lifeline when things are tough, but are also a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive space to chat and make new friends. We are an inclusive organisation, and strive to cater for any individual needs that members may have, to ensure they can access our groups.

One-to-one support

Generate can also provide individual support on a one-to-one basis. This can be either mentoring, counselling or advocacy support. Some members prefer this service before feeling able to attend larger groups, but they can also run alongside:

Counselling

Our Counselling service works with individuals and can be tailored to your needs. We can work on-line or face-to-face and again we strive to meet the needs of our service users. Because of this, the venue can be your home or one of our therapy rooms, or somewhere else that works well for you.

Our counsellor is BACP registered and has many years’ experience working with trans and non-binary people and those questioning their gender. They also have their own lived experience of supporting close family members with their transition.

Our counselling service is free to those who are unwaged, and donations for those with an income can be discussed on enquiry. Depending on income and circumstances suggested donations are between £5 and £50.

To discuss counselling please contact us.

Advocacy

If you are transgender, non-binary or gender questioning and feel that you’d like someone to support you with meetings, appointments, form filling, negotiating with employers etc. or even to go to social events or to go shopping for clothes – anything at all, we can provide you with this support – just get in touch and we’ll discuss how we can help.

Drop in sessions

We hold a weekly drop-in session at the Over the Rainbow Café in York, which is attended by staff members and volunteers, by whom you will be made hugely welcome. These drop ins are  a time to get to know a little more about Generate and to socialise with the community, they are a good place to chat with staff about signing up as a member of Generate or a supportive chat and help signposting you to other helpful organisations.

We also run several groups, activities, and social meets, and provide a changing program of these activities throughout the year. Our Events co-ordinator is super responsive and flexible and will ensure that events are made inclusive and safe and that ideas for new events are considered regularly.

Keep an eye on our events page for upcoming social activities or for more information on the support we can provide to transgender, non-binary, and gender questioning individuals, please contact us.
